READ MY HIPS is a collection of memoir essays by Kim Brittingham that focus on issues of self-image, weight, happiness, self-esteem, and dieting. Rather than your run of the mill ‘how I lost weight’ or ‘how I learned to love myself’ stories, Kim is honest with herself and therefore with her reader. Her message is so important to anyone at any weight or any level of body consciousness. Be happy, love yourself, and live your life TODAY. Losing weight or being a particular size is no magic pill to self-esteem and self-respect. Not losing weight or being a particular size doesn’t mean that you should be unhappy, unloved, or should put off living your life as you want. Kim’s stories are inspiring, uplifting, eye-opening, and funny. She opens your eyes to how society values and judges overweight people, particularly women. But her message is clear throughout: do not let society’s obsession with what you are supposed to look like stop you from being who you’re, doing what you want to do, and yes, being happy! READ MY HIPS reminded me of another blog on a completely different topic, Bella DePaulo’s ‘Singled Out,’ which is more of a research-oriented look at how society unfairly judges, dismisses, and alienates single people. Totally different topic and approach, but it makes you stand

In this blog, the author immerses herself in the “diet world.” She joins dieting groups like Weight Watchers, buys diet food, and most importantly, talks to dieting women. She’s a sociologist, but she not only gathers information about other women, she asks herself the same questions. Although I can see this as a textbook for a women’s studies class, I did not find it a difficult or boring read. I found it fascinating. And as someone who has done quite a bit of my own research in this area, I found a host of new insights and ideas. Very well done.

Breastfeeding and dieting at the same time? My son is eight weeks old and I’m nursing him. However I would like to be in a bikini this summer. I want to know if working out is going to effect my milk supply. I enjoy eating and I’m awful at dieting but I do enjoy working out and exercising. I use to work out five days a week doing yoga, walking, and playing on the wii as much as I can. I’ve been having a hard time keeping my milk supply up as it’s so the last thing that I want to do is mess my milk up and have to feed my son formula.

I have had firsthand success with the metabolism-raising last phase of this diet and think that, if nothing else, everyone should do Phase 3. It is really amazing how, slowly but surely, you get to eat more without gaining weight. Ultimately, this means no more dieting! This is something other weight loss plans do not teach you and makes Curves unique.

It depends what you mean by dieting. If you mean eating healthy foods that have enough calories for your needs rather than eating crappy fastfood, that's great. If you mean eating processed, low-calorie “health-food” bars, not so much.

Despite one highly publicized but very questionable study about exercising during lactation, there is NO evidence that moderate exercise is anything but beneficial for nursing mothers (or anyone else, for that matter.) Plan to exercise after nursing so your breasts won't be full and uncomfortable. Wear a supportive sports bra. Drink a glass of water before and immediately after exercising. Drink more in hot weather. If you regularly lift weights or do other exercises involving repetitive arm movement, start slowly. If you develop plugged ducts, cut back and start again more slowly. Rinse off your breasts before nursing – some babies don't like the taste of the salt. Take walks with your baby. If you carry him in a backpack, his extra weight will use up even more calories. Weather permitting, go for lots of walks – this counts as exercise and gets you out of the house as well. It the weather keeps you inside, try carrying your little one in a sling while you do housework – and try dancing with him. You may feel silly, but he'll love it and so will you. Nobody will see you, and postpartum mothers are supposed to act a little bit goofy – the technical term is “baby brain”. As for dieting, just make healthy choices but make sure your getting the proper amount of calories to not interfere with your milk production!!! Best wishes and congrats on your new bundle of joy…..my newest one will arrive MONDAY!!!! :) Happy Easter :)

Ultimately, I’ve found a new way to eat and live. As Dr. Richard Lipman says “it is not a diet, it’s how you have to live your life” and boy is he right. I’ve lost thirteen pounds on Dr. Lipman’s The one hundred Calorie Secret. I live in Miami and have been quite fortunate to have become a patient of his. He understands what dieting is all about and wants you to toss away the guilt and move on from this point. His blog has helped me tremendously. This new way of living for me really works. It is just how I like to eat! I enjoy the choices that are given and you know exactly how much you can eat. The shopping is easy and everything is detailed and written out for you. It is hard to make mistakes. It is an easy read, informative and will get you where you need to be. Buy it, read it and the pounds will start coming off! It is a great choice for me!
